President’s Report of 2019 Activities - 51st UTS General Assembly February 9, 2020
In April: annual UTS scholarship donation appeal began. Donors have been able to make donations online via PayPal since 2017. Board member, Andriy Bidochko monitors these transactions.
In July: we chose 16 scholarship recipients, who received a total of $10,000 In scholarships. This was the 47th year of the UTS scholarship program. The biggest contributor of $3,000 was the Maria Hulai Lion Foundation in NYC. Nickolas Kotow and George Honchar personally sent letters thanking the foundation for its continued support.
In August: UTS held its annual scholarship awards ceremony at Frick Fine Arts Building on the University of Pittsburgh campus. The 2019 UTS scholarship campaign marked the 47th year of the UTS scholarship program. As stated above, the UTS scholarship drive awarded scholarships to 16 very deserving students. To date we have made 485 awards to 298 students totaling $232,200. Victor Onufrey, MD, was the featured speaker at our event. He spoke on serving our country as both a US Air Force officer and as a surgeon. He continues to serve his community as an oncological surgeon. He has served our country in Bosnia and in Operation Iraqi Freedom. His talk was very inspirational. Dr. Onufrey has also done humanitarian work in Peru, Panama, and of course, in Ukraine. The award ceremony and social hour were somewhat well attended. But because of the timing of our presentation date, only half of the recipients were able to attend and to be a part of our group photo. any suggestions?
UTS board member Nickolas Kotow and UTS member Svitlana Honchar wrote articles about our scholarship program (and later our Ukrainian of the Year event), for “The Ukrainian Weekly“ and to «Свобода», respectively, to publicize our UTS accomplishments nationally and internationally.
In July and August, UTS board members Nick Kotow and Andriy Bidochko initiated and met with the community in two well-attended meetings in Carnegie, and initiated the potentially very successful Pittsburgh Ukrainians website. Please access it at PittsburghUkrainians.com (Please check this out today and sign up as a subscriber, at no charge.)
In September, at the encouragement of UTS member Rostyslav Boykowycz, President sent both a USPS letter and email to US State Department in Kyiv, where we supported the non-immigrant visa applications of Mr. (Pavlo) and Mrs. (Lina) Kushch to visit the USA. They are world-renowned Ukrainian journalists, who were threatened with death and forced out of Donets’k Ukraine by Putin’s Russian invaders.
In November: UTS hosted it’s 49th annual Ukrainian of the Year ceremony and dinner-dance at the Club at Nevillewood. We hosted a capacity crowd.
With a unanimous nomination from the UTS board, the society honored His Eminence Archbishop Daniel Zelinsky of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. In preparations for granting of Autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I on November 3, 2018, granted Archbishop Daniel participation as in all of the lengthy negotiations, and finally the formal conclusion of the process and signing of the agreement “On Cooperation and Interaction between Ukraine and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople“ by His All Holiness Bartholomew and President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko. On December 15, 2018 Archbishop Daniel participated in the unification council of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, and also in the official ceremony at Holy Great Martyr George Patriarchal Cathedral in Constantinople (Istanbul Turkey) of signing and granting the Tomos of Autocephaly to the newly unified Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Ukraine on January 5-6, 2019.
As well as many priests, their wives, and faithful, also in attendance was His Eminence Archbishop Antony, head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the USA. In addition, present was the Honorable Myroslav Kastranj, Ukraine’s consul in New York City.
(After many months of searching, we found a local talent, Taras Davyda, to calligraph in both languages, our Ukrainian of the Year plaque. We thank Kathy Boykowycz for the many years of using her calligraphy talents for our prior Ukrainian of the Year plaques!)
Archbishop Daniel: Многая літа!
Although we did not sponsor it, UTS’ checking account was used to deposit funds donated through the very successful 2020 Маланка/ Ukrainian New Year’s Eve celebration. Board member and UTS secretary/treasurer Nickolas Kotow was treasurer of the event. Over $1600 was sent in early February 2020, to the recovering soldiers at the Lviv Medical Hospital. (Donations continue to come in.) These soldiers are recovering from the Russian invasion in the Donbas region of Ukraine. Father Myron Horboviyj, the chaplain of the hospital will be distributing funds to needy healing soldiers on an individual basis.
The society continues to maintain a very professional and up-to-date website and Facebook page, which were monitored and updated by UTS board member Andriy Bidochko. He will also begin a Linked-in social media account for UTS in 2020.
As we enter our 51st year, the board plans to continue to reach out to new and past members and the now-employed UTS scholarship recipients, to build up our membership numbers. Additionally we are looking to have more opportunities to socialize and network, and to provide leadership and community activities, as we did with the recent Malanka. We will also make increased use of online services.
Any suggestions?
Sincerely,
George Honchar
President
