Activities
  1. Ukrainian of the Year:

Each year the Society selects a recipient(s) to receive the UTS Ukrainian of Year award. The society recognizes people of local, national and international stature who have contributed to the Ukrainian community, scholarship or other achievement in a significant way.

    Criteria for the award include:
    • Technological or professional accomplishments
    • Contribution to perpetuation of Ukrainian heritage
    • Humanitarian achievement

    Eligibility:
    • The award can be presented to any individual, Ukrainian or not, residing within or outside the territory of the UTS, provided that the individual is willing to publicly acknowledge the award.
    • Solicitations for Ukrainian of the year are solicited around September of every year, and voted on by the UTS Executive Board. The award is presented at the UTS annual dinner-dance in November.

  2. Scholarship Program:

Each year the Society awards a number of scholarships to students attending accredited colleges and universities, both undergraduate and graduate. Scholarship funds are solicited annually from the Ukrainian community and awarded at UTS scholarships in amounts of $500 each. Generally, a social is held by the Society to distribute the funds, inviting the recipients, their families and the general community to attend. The Society also contributes to the education of Ukrainian students through a donation through the “SMOLOSKYP” organization in Ukraine, which distributes the money to deserving students in Ukraine, to help them with their post-secondary and graduate educations.

The Society also awards a number of funded scholarships, in varying amounts, and according to the criteria established by the family or entity funding the scholarship.

  3. General Assembly:

The Society has a general assembly early in each year open to both members and the Ukrainian community at large. Only verified members may vote, however in any proceedings that require a quorum vote at the assembly. Discussions are held about the Society’s accomplishments and suggestions taken for other activities, etc. Other issues important to the Ukrainian community are often discussed also.

  4. Other Activities:

The Society sponsors other activities throughout the local community, such as hosting receptions for Ukrainian dignitaries who come into Pittsburgh (such as President Leonid Krawchuk), Press Events for visiting academics, judges, businesspersons, etc., and/or social events with them. Occasionally, the Society co-sponsors events with other organizations in the Pittsburgh area which promote Ukrainian culture and academics.
